interview with_Robert Carsen

An exhibition is a space in which works of art or objects meet an audience. A scenographer’s principal role is to ensure that these components are flawlessly assembled in an exhibition, shedding light on the lineup of artistic creations while embracing innovation and a creative spark. Let us invite you to indulge in the world of scenography with Robert Carsen, a Canadian artistic director, who frequently crosses the boundary between stage direction and exhibition design.

Opera stage meets exhibitions
Scenography is a compound formed by blending the two words, “scene” and “graphic.” Although this notion may seem unfamiliar to some extent, the encounter between the performing and visual arts have long been present throughout history. More recently, Olafur Eliasson, a world-renowned artist, created visual scenes for <Tree of Codes>, a performance by dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet, choreographed by Wayne McGregor’s studio. On the other side of the globe, the LACMA features an exhibition embellished with Chagall’s vibrant costumes and monumental sets for ballet and opera, delivering ‘Fantasies for the Stage’ until January 2018. For the <Volez, Voguez, Voyagez ? Louis Vuitton(VVV)> exhibition that arrived in Seoul last summer, Robert Carsen transformed the exhibition venue, Dongdaemun Design Plaza(DDP), into a stage set for ‘Around the World in 80 Days.’ It is no surprise that an internationally-acclaimed director of opera who led over 100 performances at the world’s most prominent theaters was behind the scenes, imbuing his works with delicacy and elegance.

Bridges Scenes and Audiences, from Operas to Exhibitions
Carsen started his career as a scenographer about a decade ago. “In 2008, I was asked to design the exhibition <Marie Antoinette> at the Grand Palais, and it was the beginning of all this,” said Carsen. At first, he turned down the offer, considering that the task was beyond the scope of his expertise. It was the former French Minister of Culture who persuaded him to take the position, making him embark on a new journey of pursuing a ‘two-track’ career. He garnered an enthusiastic response from the audience for his scenography for the <L’Impressionisme et la Mode> exhibition at the Musee d’Orsay in 2013, following the <Bohemes> exhibition at the Grand Palais in 2012. LVMH Chairman Bernard Arnault, who was deeply inspired after visiting the exhibition at the Musee d’Orsay, commissioned him to oversee the scenography for the VVV exhibition.

Sharing Different but Similar Aspirations
He was intrigued and fascinated by the fact that an exhibition allows visitors to approach artworks in multiple ways, unlike a stage performance, in which the audience is fixed opposite the stage. “Because we do not know what path they would take and how they will experience the exhibition, we must ensure that the objects look beautiful from all sides. Finding the best answer to this was definitely the hardest part of my job,” he said.
Nevertheless, how he communicates with the audience at a stage performance resembles the way he makes visitors feel connected to an exhibition space. “Each object is different from the other, yet one common aspect is that all the objects are telling stories. I wanted to make sure the visitors could see the objects in a new light,” he added. A common characteristic of the exhibitions designed by Carsen is the rhythmical variations that occur with dramatic scene changes. Similarly, each scene from the VVV exhibition made an impression on visitors, just like the arias or duets taking the opera stage, ready to charm the spectators one after another. The Music Room, a gorgeous modern composition created by Carsen, marks the grand finale of the VVV exhibition.

Retracing a Great Journey through an Exhibition
The VVV exhibition has been a profound experience for Carsen. “I intended to turn this exhibition into a great journey,” Carsen said. He focused on delivering the curator’s message, while meticulously executing the theme of ‘Invention of Travel,’ by including a sand dune and a life-size sail alongside other surprises. The deck was designed to be slightly angled to give an impression that it was actually sailing, reflecting his attention to detail. “I personally do not like it when it is easy to predict what will happen next. Even in an exhibition space, it is hard for me to get focused when the next section comes into view,” he added. He claimed to have enjoyed an artistic freedom spurred by the immense scale of the DDP, which led visitors to easily lose their sense of direction while exploring the exhibition halls one by one.
Following the opening of the VVV exhibition at the former American Stock Exchange building in New York last October, he will return to his field of stage direction with the forthcoming production of Shakespeare’s <The Tempest>, set to premiere in December at the Comedie-Francaise. However, whatever project he leads, his goal remains fundamentally the same: to let people know about the importance of art, allowing them to travel between the past and the present. “I believe that we attend a theater show or an art exhibition to reflect on ourselves, to learn about people.” by D. H. (art writer)
